Product Description
With the spate of publicity surrounding the possible health risks posed by childhood immunization, parents are no longer simply following doctor's orders and automatically having their children vaccinated. Instead, they are asking questions. The problem is the search for answers only leads parents to conflicting, one-sided information: doctors claim that parents are endangering their child's life if they refuse shots, while radical vaccine opponents claim parents are endangering their child's life if they accept shots. With THE VACCINE BOOK, parents finally have one, fair, impartial, fact-based resource they can turn to for answers. Each chapter is devoted to a disease/vaccine pair and offer a comprehensive discussion of what the disease is, how common or rare it is, how serious or harmless it is, the ingredients of the vaccine, and any possible side effects from the vaccine. Ultimately, parents will have to make their own informed decisions as Dr. Bob Sears is neither pro-vaccine nor anti-vaccine. But THE VACCINE BOOK will provide exactly the information parents want and need as they make their way through the vaccination maze.

5 out of 5 stars The Vaccine Book   July 19, 2010

Great book, with all the info needed to make the best choice on vaccinations. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST unbiased book on vaccines out there   July 9, 2010

I have been able to make a very informed decision for my baby regarding vaccines thanks to Dr. Sears. This book is very informative without being too longwinded and hard to understand. I haven't been able to find a book anywhere else that has presented both sides of the issue this well.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Nurse   July 7, 2010

I appreciated how the author wrote this book and included the alternative vaccination schedule and why it he recommends it. I am an OB/GYN nurse, however, vaccinations does come into play because the mothers are inquiring more about them than ever before. People don't understand that in nursing school, they teach you the "whats" but not necessarily the "whys" (believe it or not). We are on our own to find truths after graduation. While a nurse should not try and influence a patient's or parent's decision one way or the other, it sure makes it easier to hear both sides and be able to present them well enough for your patient to make an educated decision...this is what this vaccine book provides.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful   June 10, 2010

I loved this book! I read a lot of reviews on a lot of vaccine books and I chose this one. I'm not an extremist, but I'm not a push-over either. I like to do my research. I can see the value in vaccinations. Some afflictions that were once common are now rare (measles) if not irradiated (polio) in the US. But I also worry about corporate motives, the aggressive scheduling of vaccines, questionable ingredients, and their side affects. Before my daughter was born, I took a workshop on vaccinations and based on that, I did her vaccines later, fewer at a time, and further apart. But coming up on her first year, there were still a number of boosters left, as well as MRR, chickenpox, and HepA. I told my husband I needed to do more research before committing to the rest of the vaccination schedule (and wish I would have read this book prior to my daughter being born). And the research on this stuff can really make your head swim...fear of your child being sick vs. fear of what kind of harm a vaccine can do. I really think Dr. Sears has the best intentions and his writing style is conversational and easy to read. He does advocate for vaccines, but gives you a lot of information from which you can draw your own conclusions and offers a more conservative vaccine schedule. The book is extremely well organized and has excellent internal references so you can go back and forth between chapters. In each chapter he goes over one disease or virus, explains what it is, how common it is, whether it's serious, if there are treatments, what the vaccine ingredients are, side affects, why some parents may want to avoid, and ultimately what his recommendation is and why. He also has separate chapters for myths and questions, side affects, ingredients, parents who delay or decline, combination vaccines, travel information, and a few more.

This book does NOT tell you what to do. You really have to put the time in and decide for yourself. There are extremists who will terrify you away from vaccines and there are doctors like Sears that see sickness everyday and can appreciate the value of vaccinations while honoring parents' concerns.

In addition to the book, you can visit the book's website for updates and more information. I found out from the website that the MMR is no longer manufactured in three separate serums, so you HAVE to get them all together. In light of this, Dr. Sears offered some extremely helpful options for parents with different levels of concern over the MMR vaccine.
