Czech out the City of Prague Philharmonic May 27, 2010 Ramsay Macinnes (Cherry Valley, Ma United States) Although the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra has produced several recordings during their existence, this is the only one I'll mention, since I would be able to say the same about each of them==This is the BEST new orchestra to come down the Pike in recent memory. They are versatile, producing spirited versions of what they offer, the majority being soundtrack music, and their output is always clearly recorded so that all instruments are heard, especially during subtle or unclear passages.
A listener could only imagine how other musical compositions would be handled by the Prague Philharmonic. Although their soundtrack recordings are not (usually) the ORIGINAL soundtrack versions, their output is generally superior to the originals, with imaginative passages & effects included. Examples here==Close Encounters, Dune, Lifeforce, Matrix, Black Hole; MANY others.
One word of warning. The City of Prague Philharmonic has a good extensive line of recordings available, the majority I've seen on multiple sets. There are crossovers of genres (i.e. SciFi, Western, Adventure, etc.) Several, even many, of the selections show up on multiple albums, & are often the same version, so there is quite an overlap. Get the track listings, & timings, if possible, from the Amazon article descriptions of each product before purchasing, to minimize repitition where possible.
Science fiction lover February 10, 2010 John Sweeney Jr. (Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin United States) I found this compilation on Rhapsody music site and downloaded it there. I enjoyed the multitude of music enough to want to purchase this album and also load it on my ipod. I am very satisfied with this album. Got what I wanted.
Sci-fi album - soindtracks November 22, 2009 Herbert Kinder (Midwest USA) 4 discs, they threw in some Bond themes, which I like but aren't sci-fi, so no harm. Great for firing photon torpedoes at slow moving traffic. Geeks delight.
What a Sleeper this one is! September 22, 2009 Nitewing '98 (Independence, MO USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Never having heard of the "City of Prague Symphony Orchestra," I was leery of this record, especially since it is 4 CD's worth of music. But it is worth every cent. Every one of these themes has been re-recorded beautifully, often competing with the original recordings. Given John William's habit of scoring science fiction, the collection is very "Williams-heavy," but that's not a bad thing. When you throw in scores by Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Basil Pouldouris, John Barry, and James Horner, you have a major collection of the best themes in Sci-Fi.
Buy this album. You won't be disappointed.
